The Four Gentlemen: How to Shine Like a Bright Chrysanthemum

The Four Gentlemen (四君子) is the collective name of four plants that symbolize traditional Chinese virtues. Valued for their natural ornamental beauty and symbolic resonance, they're regular subjects in classical Chinese art and represent the four seasons: plum blossom (winter), orchid (spring), bamboo (summer), and chrysanthemum (autumn).

In this third installment of the Four Gentlemen Chinese Makeup series, we reveal the golden beauty of the chrysanthemum.

4 Steps to Bright Chrysanthemum Beauty

Step 1

Complete your base makeup and set with the Flawless Jade Breathable Setting Powder for a light, translucent base.

Brush your brows and fill them in with the Luodai Floral Eyebrow Define Powder Pencil. For true Chinese historical makeup accuracy, slender, elongated brows are best. Using a shader brush, apply yellow eyeshadow using bold strokes from the outer corner to the center of your lid. Repeat until the color is vivid and bright, like a chrysanthemum petal.

Step 2

Using a white eyeshadow, lightly fill in the rest of the lid and sculpt out a curved shape at the front of your lid, as if you were doing a half-cut crease. Apply white shadow to your entire lower lash line using a pencil brush

Returning to your outer corner, create another petal using white eyeshadow on the lower lash line. This petal should be a mirror image of the yellow petal. Once complete, the petals should both be pointing diagonally in opposite directions. Upward (yellow) and downward (white).

Step 3

Cure your lashes and apply the Pine Soot Precise Definition Mascara to your top and bottom lashes.

Highlight and sculpt your cheeks using the Eastern Beasts Sculpting Makeup Palette and apply your favorite lip color.

Bonus Step

Tie your hair up in a neat updo for a sleek look.

Your chrysanthemum Chinese makeup look is complete. As the autumn chill sets in, you'll still stand elegant and radiant with the bright hues of the Hermit of All Flowers.
